An empath, artists and the holiday “shoulds”

Posted by Beth Cyr Kroh on

As an empath, the holidays can create a lot of pressure, and a real opportunity to create boundaries. The collective energy of all the “shoulds” is pretty intense and, for me, like no other time of year.
Every year I feel like I’ve not done enough, I’m too late, I’m failing as a business owner, as a family member. Every year I think I’ll get a handle on all of it, I’ll do better, I’ll ignore those feelings and say a big fuck you to all the things I think I should be doing. Or I’ll start preparing in September! or July! All of the things for holiday sales should be done before Thanksgiving and they just aren’t. Ever. (not that that's true, just the feeling)
I dislike the culture of “buying things” to just buy things and give things, of Black Friday sales and Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and how can I capitalize on the income I might get from people wanting to buy things. I hate that it’s a reminder that maybe all I’m doing is contributing to more “stuff” and more voices saying “buy my things so I can survive” when a lot of people also feel frustrated and overwhelmed and opt for an amazon gift card instead because, why not, everyone can find something on amazon. (I totally buy things on amazon, no judging, just saying, before you buy a gift for buying sake, maybe think twice)
So many artists and creators are trying to take advantage of a busy season that can put money in their bank accounts to just pay bills and survive, while spending too many hours in the studio and not enough hours just… being. Being with family and friends and enjoying the time off, being in tune with the seasonal change and going in to hibernation mode. The pressure to just make as much as possible in hopes that this will be the best season yet is crazy making.
A few little requests - if you know an empath, remind them that the feelings they are feeling might not be theirs. If you know an artist who is potentially going in to overdrive and you’re unaffected by all the busy and overwhelm, take them some chocolate, give them a hug, stop by their holiday fair to just say hi and give them support, offer to get them food or let them go to the bathroom if they’re stuck in a booth. If you really feel the need to buy a random gift for someone, think about supporting an artist or a small business. Buying something from an artist is like giving them a gift too, buying a random gift from a big chain store just feeds the beast.
The next few weeks are going to be even more intense. We all need reminders to take a deep breath, a nap, a long bath and a break from everyone telling us what we should be doing. If you can’t make space for any of those things, at least try to create a boundary, a bubble, a safe turtle shell around your energy that can help protect you from the shoulds, the pressures and expectations of the world around you.

Copic Multiliner SP Giveaway - details and rules
Sometimes I do some random things without much thought. This giveaway is one of those things! I had the idea to giveaway a set of these copic multiliner sp pens and then kind of brushed it off. The next day someone messaged me asking about the pens I was using. It felt like a sign. I ordered a set and they came in yesterday just as I was kicking off the big 5k giveaway. This is sort of connected, but an entirely separate giveaway.

Why do a giveaway of these pens? They are so awesome because they are refillable and the nibs are replaceable! They have an aluminum body, not plastic. They are expensive and in a price range many artists can't afford (full retail list price is $12.49/ea) Having been a full time artist for almost 15 years, I know buying what you want isn't always an option. In the hopes of trying to find the materials and tools that I want that are the most eco-friendly and sustainable, I was really happy to find these. No more using up a pen and throwing it away, or damaging a nib and not having a way to replace it even if there is still ink in the pen. They travel really well and I've never had one leak.

To Enter:

2 - like the post
3 - tag at least one artist friend, each friend is an entry

Bonus entries:

TogetherRising

Posted by Beth Cyr Kroh on

I’m having a sale through end of Friday to support Together Rising - 10% off all ready to ship items, 10% of sales to Together Rising - no code needed, discount will show in cart. If you haven’t seen their work and have a general caring about the world around you, you should check them out. There is so much going on in our country that is achingly awful, and my sensitive, empathic self doesn't deal very well. Often we feel powerless to do anything. They do great things and supporting them means they can do even more things.

March Meet the Maker

Posted by Beth Cyr Kroh on

Sometimes I have a hard time making decisions. So many decisions all. the. time. So I asked in my IG stories which ring I should finish first and here’s the winner! Thanks for deciding for me - it’s a fun way to not have to make a decision. I’ll finish the other ring next week when I have more time.

Today is the beginning of #marchmeetthemaker - the first prompt is “favorite to make” and it’s fitting that funky meteorite rings are my favorite. I really want to outfit everyone with a meteorite ring. It’s an amazing reminder of the vast universe we live in. Can you imagine where this meteorite has been and everything that happened to put the two of you together? Kinda special.

If you’re new to following me and/or haven’t seen #marchmeetthemaker on Instagram before, it’s a fun month long challenge with easy prompts that artists and makers from all over the world participate in. Last March I found some of my very favorite artist friends, which is the main reason I’m doing it again. It’s an opportunity to let people get to know you on some different levels and stretch what you share on IG. I hope to make some new connections and give a deeper look in to my world so you can get to know me better.

.

If you’re an artist/maker/creator - join the fun! Here is the full list of prompts from Joanne Hawker:

I always forget about SAD when I’m sad

Posted by Beth Cyr Kroh on

Let’s talk about SAD (seasonal affective disorder) Every year I forget. It’s a slow creep and I’m unprepared until it’s in full swing and it’s not until I totally break at the end of February that I remember “February is the worst”. And seriously, I always forget. The brain is funny like that.

As winter starts to settle in, it’s the holidays, the New Year, things are busy and stressful and I keep plowing through until February which feels like an unavoidable black hole that sucks me in. I don’t remember why I feel so awful, only that it’s a struggle to not feel awful. And I’m not even aware of what is happening until it’s too late - until it’s so bad and I’m wondering wtf is wrong with me, why am I such a failure, maybe if I curl up in a hole I can just wait it out. I feel like an energetic dark cloud and I don’t want to be around other people and infect them with whatever plague I’ve contracted.

I grasp at all my usual feel good things - exercise, yoga, meditation, eating healthy, taking all the supplements - but just grasping and doing my best isn’t good enough.

As the light starts to change I remember. Oh! It’s February. I’m not a failure, my brain just ceases to function properly and tells me I am. I start to crawl out of the black hole once I realize that I’m in it and by the next fall it’s such a distant memory I forget to prepare. It’s hard to get out of something you don’t even realize you’re in. When you’re happy and feeling fine and functional it doesn’t seem like it’s possible to end up back in that place.

One of these years I’ll have enough money to take the whole month off from work and take a trip to avoid the usual daily routines that become so difficult by having unusual daily activities in a new location. Taking 2 weeks off is one of the few things I’ve experienced that when I looked back I was like “oh, hey! that February didn’t suck!” Do you have things you’ve done that help you through the winter darkness?

I’ve set a reminder on my calendar for January 2020 so I don’t forget.

Ps - started a new painting. It’s probably going to be titled “Don’t get sucked into the black hole” - maybe I’ll hang it in my bedroom as a reminder.
